How sustainable is

Ramie

?

Ramie is also called stinging nettle. It is one of the oldest fibers used for textiles by humans, but not a very common fibre today. It can be considered sustainable if the origin is Europe, since it can differ a lot in the process of production of ramie between countries. China has long grown ramie and it is also called “China grass”. Ramie is a very strong fibre, even stronger when it is wet. Despite this, it is not very durable, so it is often blended with other fibres. It is similar to flax, and does not take dye as well as cotton.
